Time flies. The latest Canadian tariff nonsense led the nightly news on NBC last night. I laughed aloud at the report when Trumperdink said the Fascist States of American holds all the cards. Critical minerals buddy. Aluminum and steel there pal. Fresh water and electricity. Elbows Up! We not only have the cards, we’re holding.
In politics: I had lots of link love for you on Canadian news. I’ll refrain for now. Nothing compares to the terrorists kidnapping people in the streets nor the ongoing malfeasance of Amerikkkan Supreme Court anointing Baron Von Shitshispants with more legal protections. Writing about the Canadian federal and provincial bills to fast track development re: the good hand we’ve got seems unimportant next to that. It’s not. The impact is long-term vs. the horrifying reality of now. I feel a tad disrespectful to write about it when I worry about everybody impacted by gangsters in the “land of the free.”
The dealings are shady for Indigenous First Nations, the bills abrogate treaty responsibilities to consult and partner with the land protectors, and extracting the resources we need to play hardball in the world has very real environmental consequences. Oh – and there is also the sweeping powers of the government that are written in allow them to skirt laws as part of the process. None of this is good.
In life: May and June were busy. Sweetie and I hosted friends, day tripped to vintage shows in quaint SW Ontario towns and SideBurn’d for the two-four holiday weekend. My work big project culminates with the release of Western’s Open Repository on July 11. I’d say I have time to breathe and write again. Except we’re playing whack-a-mole with librarian staffing as folks are seconded to manage other departments until we can hire behind a handful of retirements. The work piles on. Weeknights find me exhausted and unlikely to spend yet more hours on my computer.
I’m well. May this find you well too. Love and courage my friends!
